Need Interviewers

The League of Women Voter of Maine Study Committee on candidate PACs is looking to deputize a few volunteers!

We need people to schedule and conduct interviews with past and present legislators, party leaders and others with experience with Maine candidate PACs. Interviewers will be trained and will work in pairs. In-person interviews will be no more than one hour in length.

Time frame: April through June 2008. Training will be Saturday, April 5th. See .

Volunteer Advocacy

The LWVME Lobby Corps is an all-volunteer effort. Even if you can only spare an hour or two a month you can be a valuable member of our team! Most of this work can be done from your home or office.

Here are the issues we're following:

  • Civil Liberties
  • Clean Elections & Campaign Finance Reform
  • Repeal of Term Limits
  • Voting Rights
  • Conduct of Elections
  • Freedom of Information
  • Lobby Reform & Ethics

If you're interested in helping us track one or more of these issues, volunteer for the Lobby Corps! Call or e-mail for more information: lwvme@gwi.net or call 622-0256.

Join the PAC Study Committee

We're working on a major study, Money in Politics: PACs in Maine. We're focusing on candidate PACs to understand how they're funded, how they influence candidate elections, and what changes, if any, should be proposed to limit the influence of private money on elected officials. Read more about it.

The Study Committee meets every two or three weeks. It's all so interesting! To join the Study Committee, call or email LWVME at (207) 622.0256 or lwvme@gwi.net.

Election Observers

LWV-Downeast is building a team of Election Observers to work with Town Clerks to build public confidence in the conduct of elections. We're observing election in Hancock County. Anyone from around the state who is interested in participating in this program or in receiving the training is welcome to volunteer. Contact LWVME at lwvme@gwi.net for more information.

New Citizens

The Portland Area League has an ongoing program to pass out voter registration cards at naturalization ceremonies for new citizens. This is a year-round project, and we need more volunteers. Read all about it here. If you are interested, please contact us at PortlandAreaLWV@att.net. It is among the most satisfying work any League member can ever do.

Easy Voters Guide

The League of Women Voters of Maine is joining with the Literacy Volunteers of Maine to produce an Easy Voters Guide for the November 2008 election. Both the California and the Oregon Leaguess also produce Easy Voters Guides. You can see what one looks like see here. If you would like to help, please contact Barbara McDade 947-8336 or by e-mail at bmcdade@bpl.lib.me.us.
