Making Democracy Work

Susana Hancock

Susana graduated from the University of Oxford, Oxford, UK, with a DPhil/PhD in Social Anthropology, MPhil in Social Anthropology, and MSt in Linguistics in January 2019. She received her BA in Linguistics from Connecticut College. She is the recipient of many fellowships and honors. Over the last year, she has been an Assistant Crew Coach at Waynflete School; participated in the Global Strategic Leadership Symposia, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, China; and Assistant Coach Oxford University Women's Lightweight Rowing Club. Since August 2018, she has volunteered with the Civics Education Project of Democracy Maine. This has included co-designing the Democracy and You lesson plan to engage middle school students in democracy; presenting in schools throughout southern Maine to create empowered and aware students; and working with university professors, teachers, activists and local governments to create a bespoke product to market to schools beginning in September 2019. Susana has numerous and varied talents ranging from winning an international award as an amateur astrophysicist, performing as a concert cellist, and performing as a sleight of hand magician.
