About Democracy Maine

Democracy Maine is a collaboration between two nonpartisan organizations - League of Women Voters of Maine and Maine Citizens for Clean Elections - that joined forces in 2018 to strengthen their advocacy and education efforts. As Democracy Maine, we work together and with other partners to make government more equitable, inclusive, and accessible by improving elections, protecting and engaging voters, and reducing the influence of private money in politics. Examples of our projects and programs include: Voter Information and Education, Ranked Choice Voting Education, Supporting Clean Elections, and Civic Education in Public Schools.

Communications Manager

Position Description

Democracy Maine is seeking a Communications Manager to support internal and external communications. They will work with staff and volunteer teams to develop effective messages and systems that reach members, donors, volunteers, the media, and the general public.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate brings the following skills:

  • Demonstrated project management and planning skills: stays on top of multiple projects without dropping any balls, plans backwards and anticipates obstacles, identifies and involves stakeholders appropriately, uses resources wisely
  • Excellent writing skills, in both formal and informal contexts
  • Comfort working in a networked, team-based, non-hierarchical environment.
  • Graphic Design experience in print and web formats
  • Experience with email content generation and list management, specifically using Mailchimp
  • Experience with building and executing social media strategy that grows and engages audiences
  • Prior knowledge of or experience in civic engagement, education, or democracy reform.
  • A deep commitment to the values of inclusion, fairness, opportunity, and nonpartisanship described in LWVME and MCCE missions.

Core Duties and Responsibilities of the Communications Manager 

  • Ensures consistent, up-to-date, on-message content on websites, social media, emails, newsletters, etc.
  • In-house design of small-to-medium sized print and web projects and skilled in managing relationships with external designers/contractors for larger projects.
  • Coordinates volunteer and staff spokespeople, and ensures volunteer leaders and staff participate in messaging and communications strategy
  • Supports local League chapters in marketing and communications
  • Builds and maintains relationships with key local, state-wide, and national reporters, bloggers, and communications staff at partner organizations
  • Ensures email data and lists are maintained and expanded according to what will engage our audience the most 
  • Establishes and maintains the infrastructure and protocols that allow staff and volunteer team members working around the state to fully collaborate in the execution of media outreach
  • Ensures internal communication through newsletters, trainings, and other methods.

Location, Compensation and Start Date

Our office is located in Portland. This is a full-time position with compensation based upon experience. Health, vision, dental, and earned time benefits are offered to all employees. We aim to have our Communications Manager start as soon as possible.
