The League of Women Voters of Maine mourns the loss of a Biddeford community member who was shot and killed during an ICE interaction around 7:00 AM this morning. Details are still being confirmed. We stand firmly with Maine immigrants and their right to safety, dignity, due process, and equal treatment under the law.
The League opposes the unwarranted deployment of ICE in our communities. These federal actions create fear, separate families, and erode trust in our institutions — and this intimidation threatens civic participation.
Every Mainer, regardless of immigration status, should be able to attend school, go to a doctor’s appointment, or simply visit their local library without fear or the threat of intimidation from ICE.
