Organizer and Membership Director
Democracy Maine and the League of Women Voters of Maine are a leading voice in Maine politics. Democracy Maine seeks a full-time Organizer and Membership Director to support our civic education, advocacy, and membership programs. This role will report to the Executive Director but will work closely with the program staff and local League leadership. The Organizer and Membership Director’s time will be split between state-level projects, supporting existing local Leagues, and developing volunteers in regions without local Leagues.

Core Responsibilities
- Build strategies for recruiting new volunteers and League members.
- Identify new volunteers and match volunteer interests with project needs, including hitting recruitment goals identified by project teams at the state and local levels.
- Assess strategies for building relationships with coalition partners and other stakeholders; identify appropriate members to represent Democracy Maine within coalitions.
- Represent Democracy Maine and local Leagues at community events and build relationships with allied organizations and community leaders.
- Direct and support local League engagement/membership and help develop and grow new local Leagues. Support emerging local Leagues and volunteer teams in regions of the state without existing leadership.
- Participate in the development of advocacy, voter engagement, and organizing strategies, working in close coordination with the Advocacy Director, Civic Engagement Manager, and Youth Programs Manager as appropriate.
- Embrace the sometimes tedious and repetitive tasks that are needed to keep volunteer teams thriving, such as making hours of recruitment calls to onboard new volunteers, staying on the phone with a volunteer to teach them how to use a key piece of organizing technology, or updating daily spreadsheet trackers.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- At least 3-5 years working in nonprofits or relevant experience.
- An ability to think strategically, outline goals, and hit milestones.
- An ability to adapt to shifting priorities without losing sight of deliverables and deadlines.
- Strong skills in listening, in-person and virtual communication, and diplomacy.
- Experience with key organizing tools like Zoom, Google Apps, Action Network, peer-to-peer texting platforms, Slack, etc.
- A commitment to building community and resiliency among our members.
- A collaborative work style that prioritizes growing the skills and confidence of volunteer leaders.
- A track record of working with individuals with diverse identities and lived experiences.
- Experience leading volunteer teams and building community efforts, with ideas about how they will accomplish this with Democracy Maine.
- A commitment to non-partisanship and DEI policies.
- Experience working remotely while consistently meeting goals.
*Experience with issue or campaign organizing, and experience organizing in rural areas, are pluses but are not required.

Compensation and Benefits:

Civic Engagement Manager

Democracy Maine is seeking a Civic Engagement Manager. This role provides critical nonpartisan voter information so that Mainers can make informed decisions on election day. We are seeking candidates who are excellent communicators and are ready to build relationships with town clerks. This role also manages projects that encourage Mainers to participate in local government. This individual should be an expert at developing and managing key projects and programs, while also creating space for valued volunteers and local leaders.

Core Responsibilities
- Manage keystone projects and programming that inform the public on voting and elections in Maine, while ensuring that Mainers have access to accurate, nonpartisan information.
- Manage and deploy voter education publications that may include printed voter guides and other voter education materials.
- Support Neighbor-to-Neighbor and Get Out the Vote projects, ensuring accurate records of voter outreach and registration activities.
- Support volunteer project teams for civic education and engagement, including: meeting management, goal-setting, volunteer orientation, problem-solving, and filling skills gaps.
- Build relationships with town and city clerks across the state and identify strong voices to build trust in elections.
- Connect clerks with resources and training to expand their ability to communicate with voters and the media.
- Assess new project ideas and opportunities, make recommendations on the viability and impact of projects to the Executive Director and the Program Committee.
- Coordinate existing programs designed to encourage participation in our elections and local government.
- Provide support to the Organizing and Membership Director and local Leagues and assist with local League events.
- Assist with youth civic engagement and provide support to the Youth Programs Manager when appropriate.
- Assist with grant research and reporting on civic engagement work.
- Manage project data to ensure accurate tracking and outreach.
*This role will need to develop an understanding of Maine’s election and voting laws so that this individual can provide factual information to Maine voters.
Qualifications:
- At least 2-3 years of working in nonprofits or relevant experience.
- Demonstrated project management and planning skills: stays on top of multiple projects without dropping any balls, plans backwards and anticipates obstacles, identifies and involves stakeholders appropriately, and uses resources wisely.
- Experience leading volunteer teams and delineation of volunteer tasks.
- Excellent communication.
- Detail-oriented.
- Demonstrates an ability to connect with individuals with a broad range of skills, experience, and confidence in leadership abilities.
- Committed to DEI policies and works well with diverse or marginalized populations.
- Comfort working in a networked, team-based, non-hierarchical environment.
- Meeting management skills, as well as facilitation and presentation skills.
- Experience working remotely while consistently meeting goals.
- Previous civic engagement experience, or working on elections, is a plus but not required.

They lead our legislative and electoral campaigns to secure and defend pro-democracy public policy, and they work with professional and volunteer leadership to support and grow our mostly volunteer advocacy team to constituent engagement at the front of our efforts to make democracy work.

Core Responsibilities:
- Work across multiple organizational policy areas simultaneously to win legislative victories. Primary policy areas include: Elections and voting; Money in politics, and Racial justice.
- Develop campaign strategies to win legislative victories and accumulate grassroots power over time.
- Represent Democracy Maine at the Maine Legislature and with other government bodies. This requires traveling to Augusta regularly during the legislative session.
- Work with other Democracy Maine staff members on shared projects as needed (including youth advocacy work), adopting a team player mindset to support efforts where this director is not the lead.
- Work with Advocacy Team leaders to build volunteer leadership in our team, collaborating on meeting management, goal-setting, volunteer orientation, leadership development, and problem-solving, organizing internal resources, and other staff support.
- Lead the Trust in Elections team and the election observation program.
- Build strong relationships with allied organizations and community leaders and represent Democracy Maine and our constituent organizations in advocacy coalitions.
- Ensure integration of diversity, equity, and inclusion in all facets of projects and project teams.
- Assist with developing and implementing fundraising strategies for advocacy work, which may include major donor outreach, grant writing, and maintaining and updating contact lists.
- Occasionally contribute to or lead electoral campaigns through the referendum process to win policy goals outside the legislature.
Required Skills:
- 2-5 years of experience working in nonprofits or relevant experience.
- Prior knowledge of and/or experience in civic engagement and/or democracy reform.
- Experience with legislative and referendum campaigns, especially in Maine.
- Strong policy analysis, research, and writing skills.
- Experience using VAN.
- Background in providing legislative testimony.
- Contacts within the Maine State Legislature and/or state government positions.
- Knowledge of state lobbying requirements.

Internships:
