The Struggle for Women's Suffrage: Revisiting Our History, Rededicating Our Future

2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment, when women won the right to vote. Commemorating the 19th amendment and reflecting on lessons learned and what remains undone, this presentation will celebrate that historic victory and the women who led the movement, while also providing a sober reflection on the compromises that split the movement and left many voters behind – choices that continue to echo 100 years later. The evening will conclude with a brief overview of the work that remains to be done.

Presented by the Thomas Memorial Library in Cape Elizabeth. Learn more and register here.

A Better Way to Elect the President: The Case for a National Popular Vote

Do you agree that in a presidential campaign:

+ The presidential candidate with the most votes in all 50 states should win?
+ Presidential candidates should have to seek support in all 50 states?
+ Every vote in every state in every election should be equal?
+ That getting more Americans to participate and vote would be a good thing for our country and democracy?

Join us to learn about how the National Popular Vote Compact can help achieve all of this without constitutional changes, and within the Electoral College structure. A National Popular Vote (NPV) bill will be introduced in the Maine Legislature in the next session. This webinar will focus on understanding how NPV works, and provide clarity about some common misunderstandings about the Electoral College and the National Popular Vote.

Presented by the Portland Area League of Women Voters.

LWV-Brunswick: "Voting Down the Rose" Book Discussion

Who was Florence Brooks Whitehouse? Well, she was from Maine. Considered a radical. And she was a key player in the women suffrage movement.

Join us in celebration of the 100th year of women winning the vote and the legacy of Florence Brooks Whitehouse! We're offering two events in October that will feature Anne B. Gass and her book, Voting Down the Rose: Florence Brooks Whitehouse and Maine's Fight for Woman Suffrage. Both events are in collaboration with Curtis Memorial Library

We encourage you to purchase or check out the book from your local library ahead of both events. You can use MaineCat, the state library catalogue, to find a copy. Click here to get started!

Voting Down the Rose is a lively account of Maine native Florence Brooks Whitehouse’s efforts to win women voting rights in the decisive final years of the campaign, 1914-1920. Considered radical for picketing the White House, Florence helped win women suffrage against a backdrop of conservative views of women’s roles, political intrigues, WWI, and the 1918 influenza epidemic.

Anne is the great-granddaughter Florence Brooks Whitehouse. You can purchase the book or borrow it from your local library in advance of the discussion.

Registration links coming soon. Limited spots will be available.
