Democracy Forum — Communities on Edge: Threats and Intimidation in the Public Sphere

Friday, March 18, 2022
4:00 PM – 5:00 PM

LWV-Downeast hosts a monthly radio program on democracy in cooperation with WERU FM. This month, we'll talk about anger and intimidation in the public sphere, especially in local politics. Where is this coming from? What is it that puts schools and elections in the bull's eye? What measures should officials take? What can ordinary people do? Bills have been introduced in Maine to provide heightened legal protections for election officials and school officials. How effective will these be? Can we still have deliberative democracy?  Learn more here.

Special Guests:

  • Patti Dubois is the Waterville City Clerk and the Legislative Policy Chair for the Maine Town and City Clerks Association.
  • Jordan LaBouff is Associate Professor of Psychology and Honors at the University of Maine.
  • Paul Markosian is an Ellsworth business owner and member of the Ellsworth School board.

This show will be pre-recorded; no listener calls will be taken. Comments and questions may be emailed to news@weru.org with Democracy Forum on the subject line.
