Last night, six candidates running to fill the role of Secretary of State met in an online forum. Over 300 viewers tuned in to hear statements made by the candidates, all Democrats, who also answered questions submitted by the dozen of organizations who hosted the event.

The online forum was moderated by Anna Kellar, executive director of the League of Women Voters of Maine, and Alison Beyea, executive director of the ACLU of Maine.

The candidates included:

  • Senator Shenna Bellows, Manchester

The discussion covered the topic of Online Voter Registration, which all candidates supported exploring, increasing public trust in the Secretary of State position, early voting infrastructure, and driver license issues.

Maine voters do not get to weigh in or vote on the choice of candidate. However, you can contact your Legislature and encourage them to choose your preferred candidate. The Legislatures will vote on a candidate on December 2nd. The vote occurs in multiple rounds. In the first round, they will vote for their top choice. Whichever candidate receives the fewest votes will be eliminated. This process is repeated until one candidate remains.
