LWVUS Constitutional Amendment Study Consensus Meeting

Open to all League members and others who are interested. Learn more about the two processes outlined in the US Constitution for making amendments. Locally and nationally this has generated much discussion for issues such as money as speech, balanced budgets, corporate personhood, etc. What, if anything, should be the League's position relative to amending our Constitution? Scholars and practitioners engaged in constitutional debate frequently deride their opponents for ignoring the meaning and requirements of the document. The question, though, is whether single, plain, or obvious meanings of constitutional provisions exist.

Join panelists Timothy Cole, Ph.D., University of Washington, Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Maine, and Solomon Goldman, JD, George Washington Law School, Adjunct Professor of Political Science at the University of Maine, as they discuss this topic.

Presenters: Ann Luther, from Maine Citizens for Clean Elections, will discuss the Clean Elections Initiative which will be on the ballot in 2015. If passed, this initiative would repair and strengthen public funding in Maine. Jan Carpenter, from We the People Maine, will present this organization's campaign supporting a citizen's initiative to apply for an Article V Convention to write a Constitutional amendment to overturn the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision.
